Beware Of Bogus Engineers warns Essex Police
Police are warning people to be on their guard against bogus Microsoft engineer callers.
Police have received reports of bogus telephone calls from people pretending to be a Microsoft engineer, saying that their remote security system has detected a problem on the computer.
The caller tries to gain the victim's trust and connects to the their computer remotely. The end result is that the victim is charged to fix problems that are not necessary and, on some occasions, bank account details are gained and then used for fraudulent transactions.
Crime Reduction Officer, Graham Anthony, says “Most people want to be helpful and avoid confrontation. Likewise, many have a trusting nature and don’t like to admit that they are confused by technical details. Fraudsters, computer scammers and the like thrive on these human responses.
"My advice is never give personal or account details to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly, even if they claim to be from your bank or the police. Take a phone number and call them back to make sure they are genuine.
"Do not allow them to have remote access to your computer and remember a bank will never ask for your PIN or your whole password."
